FORECAST: The End of an Era? The La Nina Era......!

After looking at heaps of data from the Pacific ocean, it seems clear that ocean temps will be returning to normal after a La Nina year last year, when sea temps cooled, resulting in Jackson, Utah, New England (there was also a La Nina in 00-01...that was sick!) and Colorado being pounded with Pow-Pow. With a year that looks like it will be neither El Nino (Taos wins) nor La Nina (Montana/Jackson wins), it's a bit of a tossup. Thus, current plans to visit Utah in January seem like the best bet being that Alta may maintain one of the most consistent snowfall averages of any ski area in the U.S., maybe the world. That being said, NOAA's seasonal predictions are a bit iffy on neutral years (and strong on El Nino/La Nina years) so we really don't have a good idea of snowfall potential this year. Seems like it could be an average year? Lets cross our fingers and hope we don't have a season like a couple of years ago.... Opinions are always encouraged on the issue at hand.....

I had my students a few years back run a statistical analysis on snowfall totals in tahoe vs. strength of the pacific ENSO (El Nino) over the past 35 years or so. Strong la nina's on the left, strong el ninos on the right. The graph kinda looked like slanted hockey sticks. La Nina had moderate variability with some of the lowest snowfalls, but averaged between lets say 300-500". Neutral years had the least variability let's say between 400-550". El Nino had the greatest variability anywhere from 200"-800". It turned out to be a fairly interesting looking graph and the kids who were all skiers were pretty into it and what the significance of it all. Conclusion, if its a neutral year, it should bode well for Utah...but nothing epic. My 2 f-ing cents (no 15 year olds included)

Utah, eh? looks like I'll have to make the trek out there during my extended three month vacation this winter.

Hilz and Seth, if you are reading this, I'm still waiting for a call back from three weeks ago.

TK, One nice thing about politics, is that you work your ass off for an entire year, then you get a break between election day (Nov 2) and Inauguration Day (Jan 22nd).

But I candefinitely see a combo trip in my future.

yeah, I think Balls is going to need the break...I think his LDL Cholestrol is at 190 from eating and sitting at a desk for the last 5 months. Get him out riding a bike or leave peepin' or something. I don't want to have to take his pack on our skin up to the hut .....
