Frappé anyone?

Storm total from the past storm is conservatively 20" at my house. Up at elevation with colder temps & better ratios, balls deep...definitely resembling a Pac NW storm. Definitely not face shots snow, but was able to open up with the new skis & let them do their thang on the earlier morning raid of Merck forest. Snowed at some pretty incredible rates until ~1-2 in the afternoon when the storm ended with some drizzle in the valley floor

Eastern woods Taconics style:

Realize this aspect looks crazy wind-affected, but basically it wasn't at all. This shot was an eastern aspect and winds were howling out of the east, but did little damage to the snow:

Beauty shot of the new sticks. Was glad to have them in the quiver for this storm:

Never before living here have I seen a forecast anywhere near as impressive. 2nd storm is looking like a crazy one. Northern New England looks to possibly get mixed with rain while southern New England stays all snow...pounding snow in Hartford while raining at Jay. I'm currently riding right on that dividing line, just hope it doesn't move much south, but rather backs itself out back north and east.

Just started snowing here moderately...let the games begin!!

Back on in Colorado!!!!

After the worst start of any season I've seen out west, it's back on in CO! I'm glad 'cause we have a killer hut trip in Aspen in a couple weeks with a lot of East Coasters joining. Vail has received 31" in the last 7 days and is forecasted to get up to 20" by Monday morning. Erica and I are heading up to Vail for the weekend to catch a free show from Karl Denson tonight and hopefully thrash some Gnar on Sat and Sunday. I'll try to get some pics of the deepness and not get caught in a massive slide in east Vail. Top to bottom BC run in east vail = 3000ft....best easy access BC I can find near the front range!

VT Snow Drought '10

See Dave's post below for details on our Sunday outing this past weekend. Here's some visual evidence so that you know we're not lying.

Gittin er' dun in the backyard.

Dave, contemplating the next 1600' back to the house.

There's no snow in VT this year...

"Tight" eastern woods.

Can't argue with freshies.

More "tight" woods.

Back in White

Cause I'm Back in White...
After almost 6 weeks of snowless-ness the white stuff finally makes its grand re-appearance here in Southern VT. Nothing blockbuster, measured 7" at my house this evening, but definitely more than I was expecting and more than enough to get me hiking again tomorrow pre-dawn.

Have finally recovered from a pretty blatant snow-xtravaganza this past weekend in the woods perched above the Keating abode. Was pretty excited to finally make a trip back to Northern VT since I haven't skied up there for a couple years now. Despite a long approach to the snows above, everybody in the group was pretty excited to do some exploring in the north facing woods off the western ridge that extends off Bolton Mtn. There was a solid 8-12" of good surface snow on top of a very solid base on the northern aspect...more than enough base so that you didn't have to worry about any ground material. We ended up logging 3 yo-yo runs on the northern aspect, each run between 500-800' vert of mostly open birch/spruce groves that you could crank high speed turns through...before the long descent back down to the Keating's house on the extended luge track which had moments of awesome-ness. Everybody in the group was in good spirits, up for anything and all on the same wavelength which made the trip all the more enjoyable to be a part of. Here are a couple pretty lousy photos I took of it...still trying to figure out my camera for action shots

A blockbuster for the Mid-Atlantic

This is a quote from one of the most conservative weather forecasters I know:

"Most of you who are regular readers know by now that I am not one given to hyperbole. That's just not my style. Part of the reason for that, in my opinion, is that few weather events are truly historic. But every now and then, one comes along that is worth of all the hype it can get, and what we see unfolding now across eastern West Virginia and central and western Virginia can only be described as 'one for the ages' in my opinion."

I know most of us here are more into the skiing aspect but since winter storms are such an intricate part of the skiing aspect i think what's unfolding down there is pretty awesome...especially since prior to this year they haven't gotten a good snow event down that way since Presidents Day 2003.

Northern VT continues to reap the rewards of moderate up-slope snow events each night while here in southern vt we just get some clouds. Good news for me is there is potential for a mid-week storm next week so hopefully can be skiing again by next weekend. Also giving me hope is this quote from the same warm-weather biased weather forecaster:

"For those thinking winter was a dud or over (referring to NY & New Englanders), excuse me if I laugh out loud for a moment! And given the latest European Weekly Climate Forecasts, this cold and stormy weather pattern is locked in through the end of February into early March--at least."

Not scared just yet!

Hand Crafted in JH

Completed my new Igneous boards just in time to celebrate turning 31 by skiing pow with Natty. Still not quite 100% two days after this debacle. Thanks Jon for those 3 tequila shots.

Location, location, location

Quick snapshot since the thaw one week ago: Jay Peak 30", Stratton 4". Really hoping a southern storm can turn up the coast next weekend and give us a good thumping cause right now there is no backcountry skiing in Mr. Green's Neighborhood.
